Heels’ NET ranking jumps up after big Quad 1 victory at Virginia

By R.L. Bynum

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — North Carolina’s fourth Quad 1 victory jumped the Tar Heels’ NET rankings to 23, stabilizing the Tar Heels’ NCAA tournament résumé that wasn’t looking good after the two losses in the Bay Area dropped them to 30.

The No. 22 Tar Heels (16–4, 4–3 ACC), with two consecutive wins after losing three of the previous four, evened their Quad 1 record at 4–4 with a come-from-behind 85–80 victory Saturday at No. 14 Virginia (16–3, 5–2). The Cavaliers only fell one spot to 14 in the NET after falling to 4–3 in Quad 1 games.

“It just gives us a reminder of the team that we are,” Seth Trimble said. “Sometimes you can get lost in adversity. You can get lost in tough times. I think that happened to us last week, but we got that reminder.”

A 23 NET ranking would translate to a low No. 6 seed, but that is only one of the metrics that the NCAA tournament selection committee uses in seeding the field. NET rankings will fluctuate throughout the season, and the only quad designation that matters is where your opponents stand on Selection Sunday, not where they ranked when the game was played.

Quadrant 1 (UNC is 4–4; 5 games left): Home games against teams with a NET ranking of 30 or better, neutral-site games against teams ranked 50 or better, and road games against teams ranked 75 or better
Quadrant 2 (UNC is 10; 3 games left): Home 31–75, neutral 51–100, road 76–135
Quadrant 3 (UNC is 5–0; 3 games left): Home 76–160, neutral 101–200, road 135–240
Quadrant 4 (UNC is 6–0; no games left): Home 161 or lower, neutral 201 or lower, road 241 or lower

With Selection Sunday seven weeks away, the average of 81 projections listed on Bracket Matrix, all made before UNC’s win at Virginia, had the Tar Heels as the lowest No. 6 seed. ESPN’s Joe Lunardi has UNC as a No. 6 seed in the South Regional (Houston) and playing Miami of Ohio in a first-round game in Portland, Ore.

A three-game Syracuse losing streak dropped its NET ranking to 79, downgrading UNC’s home game against the Orange on Monday, Feb. 2 (7 p.m., ESPN) from Quad 2 to Quad 3 and moving the Tar Heels’ game at Syracuse on Feb. 21 from Quad 1 to Quad 2. In the last three games, Syracuse (12–8, 3–4) has lost 81–73 at Boston College, 76–74 at home against Virginia Tech and 85–76 at home Saturday against Miami.

UNC next has to avoid damaging losses when it visits Georgia Tech (11–9, 2–5; 145 NET ranking) in a Quad 3 game Saturday (2 p.m., ACC Network) and that Quad 3 game against Syracuse before back-to-back Quad 1 games: Feb. 7 at home against No. 5 Duke (18–1, 7–0; 3) and Feb. 10 at Miami (16–4, 5–2; 37).
