Tar Heels in pros: White surges amid trade rumors; Ryan, Davis, Ingram lighting up G League

By R.L. Bynum

Coby White delivered three standout performances during a 3–0 week for the surging Chicago Bulls, just as trade chatter intensified ahead of the Feb. 5 NBA trade deadline.

Meanwhile, Cormac Ryan, RJ Davis and Harrison Ingram continue to light up the G League, while Cole Anthony had his best game in three months and Caleb Love turned in another impressive game.

The Bulls are above .500 at 23–22 and on a four-game win streak, their longest since February 2022, in large part because of White.

After scoring 27 points, six 3-pointers and six assists in Tuesday’s 138–110 win over the Los Angeles Clippers and 22 points, three 3-pointers and four assists in Thursday’s 120–115 victory at Minnesota, he collected 22 points, five 3-pointers and seven assists in Saturday’s 114–11 victory over Boston.

With the NBA trade deadline approaching, White, whose $12.8 million contract expires at the end of the season, is again the subject of trade rumors. The latest, from reporter Jake Weinbach, suggests that Minnesota is pursuing him in a deal that would send the Bulls Mike Conley, Terrence Shannon Jr. and multiple second-round picks. Chicago, though, Weinbach reports, wants an unprotected first-round pick in return.

Other suitors for White, according to the Chicago Bulls on SI, are the Houston Rockets and the New York Knicks. Rockets point guard Fred VanVleet is out indefinitely with a torn ACL.

Ryan continues to flourish playing for the G League’s Wisconsin Herd, although in losses last week to the Noblesville Boom. In Thursday’s 95–90 loss, Ryan had 23 points, five 3-pointers and seven rebounds. In Saturday’s 117–115 defeat, he had 25 points, three 3-pointers, two rebounds, two assists and a steal.

Ryan is averaging 20 points per game while shooting 49.5% from the floor, making 40.4% of his 3-point attempts and 92.5% of his free-throw attempts and averaging 3.9 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.6 steals. He has eight games this season with at least 22 points.

Davis put up two big scoring games and a huge assist game in a double-double last week as his South Bay Lakers went 1–2.

In Tuesday’s 126–119 road loss to the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, he poured in 24 points and four 3-pointers, then had 21 points, three 3-pointers and three assists in Thursday’s 123–113 loss to the Mexico City Capitanes.

In Saturday’s 125–95 win over Mexico City, Davis put up a double-double with 10 points and 10 assists, while pulling down five rebounds.

Davis is averaging 17.9 points while shooting 43.3% from the floor, 38.5% from 3-point range and 88.2% from the free-throw line. He’s scored at least 20 points in 13 of 25 games, including five with at least 25 points.

In a first season in Milwaukee that’s been filled with many nights watching from the bench, Cole Anthony, who has only played in 31 of the Bucks’ 44 games, scored 17 points, three 3-pointers and added three rebounds and three assists in Wednesday’s 122–102 home loss to Oklahoma City.
