Wilson out for season after breaking right thumb while dunking

By R.L. Bynum

Caleb Wilson is out for the season after breaking his right thumb while dunking in a non-contact drill on Thursday. He had surgery and be out for the rest of the season.

Wilson had been progressing in his recovery from fracturing his left hand and was doing individual workouts when the injury happened. He had not yet participated in five-on-five drills in practice.

Wilson posted a post-surgery photo on Instagram.

UNC is 5–1 without Wilson, and will have to find a way the rest of the season without him. He repeatedly said that he wanted to get back in time for Saturday’s Duke game. With Wilson, the Tar Heels went 19–5. He set the UNC freshman record for 20-point games with 17 and averaged 19.8 points (a program freshman record) and 9.4 rebounds per game.

ESPN’s Shams Charania reports that he expected to be cleared during the NBA pre-draft process.
