In a season defined by precocious brilliance and cruel twists of fate, North Carolina freshman Caleb Wilson has earned a permanent place in Tar Heel lore.
The Associated Press named Wilson a second‑team All‑American, a distinction that guarantees his jersey will hang from the rafters of the Smith Center — joining 54 other Tar Heel greats who came before him.
The freshman from Atlanta didn’t just arrive in Chapel Hill; he reshaped the record book the moment he stepped on the court.
Wilson became the first UNC freshman to lead the team in points, rebounds, and assists per game as a freshman. His 19.8 points per game stand as a school freshman record. He opened his career with 24 consecutive double‑figure scoring games and recorded 17 games with 20 or more points — both UNC freshman records.
His impact stretched beyond the box score. Wilson earned first‑team All‑ACC honors, joining Antawn Jamison and Tyler Hansbrough as the only Tar Heel freshmen to do so.
He also claimed a spot on the ACC All‑Freshman Team and collected national recognition throughout the year, including National Player of the Week honors three times and three ACC Freshman of the Week awards.
Analytics backed up the eye test: Wilson was KenPom’s Game MVP in half of the games he played, winning the distinction 12 times in 24 appearances.
The freshman showed his mettle on the biggest stages. He scored 23 points to lead UNC past Duke in a 71–68 thriller, delivered a clutch late basket in the Tar Heels’ road win at Virginia, and put up 24 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and four steals in a statement victory over Kansas.
Wilson also proved to be one of the best rebounding freshmen in program history, averaging 9.4 boards per game, second only to Hansbrough. His 11 double‑doubles and streak of six straight 20‑point games marked yet more program firsts.
But the season that seemed to promise ended in frustration. He broke a bone in his left hand on Feb. 10 at Miami sidelining him. When he was about to return, he broke his right thumb dunking in practice on March 5, ending his season.
In a program built on legends, Caleb Wilson has already ensured his name will hang among them.
Wilson will be the second No. 8 to have his jersey honored, joining Jim Jordan, who was Helms second-team All-American in 1945 and a Helms first-team All-American in 1946. UNC made the NCAA tournament final in 1946 and finished 30–5.
