Former N.C. State sharpshooter Able commits to UNC

By R.L. Bynum

In an era when the transfer portal can turn rivals into roommates overnight, former N.C. State guard Matt Able has committed to play at rival North Carolina, according to multiple Tuesday reports.

Able steps into a backcourt picture that includes former Utah point guard Terrence Brown, who committed earlier on Tuesday. Later on Tuesday, former FAU center Maxim Logue committed to the Tar Heels.

Able is the fourth N.C. State player to transfer to UNC and the first since World War II, joining Bernie Mock, Fred Swartzberg and Bones McKinney. Able’s transfer comes one offseason after Ven-Allen Lubin transferred from Carolina to N.C. State.

The 6–6 sharpshooter showed enough early flashes during his freshman season with the Wolfpack. He came off the bench in all 34 games, averaging 8.8 points and 3.4 rebounds while providing ball pressure and length on the perimeter. He shot 41.6% from the floor and 35.5% from 3-point range.

His role expanded in January when his scoring spiked, and his shooting steadied. In a two-game run against Miami and UNC, he totaled 36 points and eight 3-pointers. He scored a season-high 19 points in the Pack’s victory over Carolina and tied for his season-high with five 3-pointers.

Roster assuming all players with eligibility other than Caleb Wilson, Luka Bogavac, Derek Dixon, Kyan Evans, Jonathan Powell, James Brown, Ivan Matlekovic and Zayden High return and the players in the incoming freshman class hold in their commitment (Dylan Mingo has reopened his recruitment), which would put UNC three under the 15-player limit. The class for next season is listed.
