As North Carolina officially opens practice Tuesday in its first season under Coach Michael Malone, the unofficial preseason rankings give the Tar Heels a modest but respectable starting point with a roster rebuilt largely through the transfer portal.
Blue Ribbon Yearbook, one of the longest-running preseason men’s basketball publications, slotted Carolina at No. 25 in its national rankings that Chris Dortch compiled, as did Gary Parrish in his “Top 25 And 1 Ranking” for CBS Sports.
Here’s what Parrish said about UNC:
“This ranking is based on the Tar Heels returning three of the top 11 scorers — specifically Jarin Stevenson, Isaiah Denis and Jaydon Young — from a team that finished 24–9 and advanced to the first round of the 2026 NCAA Tournament. That core will be joined by a recruiting class highlighted by Virginia Tech transfer Neoklis Avdalas, Utah transfer Terrence Brown, N.C. State transfer Matt Able, South Dakota transfer Cameron Fens [top photo], international prospects Sayon Keita and Alexandros Samodurov, and four-star prospects Maximo Adams and Kevin Thomas.”
Carolina didn’t crack ESPN’s “Way Too Early Top 25” that Jeff Borzello released on Sept. 2, but made his list of “next five” teams.
The AP preseason Top 25 poll won’t be released until Oct. 13.
The advanced metrics were less generous, at least for now.
EvanMiya’s preseason roster rank has UNC at No. 43, while Bart Torvik’s T-Rank projection system has the Tar Heels at No. 44.
Both systems lean heavily on returning production and measurable data points rather than name recognition or recruiting pedigree, a distinction that matters for a Carolina team that turned over much of its roster this offseason under Malone.
The gap between the publication rankings and the computer models isn’t unusual for a program navigating a coaching change and heavy roster turnover. Polls tend to weigh brand strength, pedigree and individual talent evaluations more heavily in the preseason. Systems such as EvanMiya and T-Rank need game data to calibrate accurately and often start new-look rosters more conservatively until results start rolling in.
On Oct. 9 at 7 p.m. in Greensboro, UNC plays the first of three exhibition games, taking on Southern Cal. After exhibitions against Indiana in Indianapolis at 5 p.m. on Oct. 18 and against Charlotte at home on Oct. 27, the Malone era officially begins on Nov. 2 with the Tar Heels’ opener at home against Western Carolina.
