Coach Michael Malone’s debut on the Carolina bench will come in a 7 p.m. game Friday, Oct. 9, as UNC announced tip times Thursday for the Tar Heels’ three exhibition contests, spread across 18 October days.
That preseason opener against Southern Cal will be the first of two UNC appearances at the First Horizon Coliseum in Greensboro over just more than two months, and it will air on ACC Network. The Tar Heels return to that same building Dec. 15 for a 7 p.m. Friday matchup against N.C. State in the Tobacco Road Classic, a non-conference game.
Nine days after the USC exhibition, the debut in a Carolina uniform for freshman center Sayon Keita (top photo), the Tar Heels travel to Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, home to the NBA’s Indiana Pacers and the WNBA’s Indiana Fever, for a 5 p.m. exhibition against Indiana on Sunday, Oct. 18. A TV designation hasn’t been set for that game.
Malone’s first game at the Smith Center follows nine days later, when Charlotte visits Tuesday, Oct. 27, at 7:30 for what will be UNC’s final preseason tune-up in a game that will only stream on ACC Network Extra. The 49ers are led by first-year coach Wes Miller, whose staff includes former UNC guard Marcus Paige as an assistant.
Carolina then opens the regular season Monday, Nov. 2, against Western Carolina, the first of six straight home games to start the season.
