Tar Heels in NBA: Wilson outstanding again; White makes season debut; Black has 4 steals in big game for Kings

By R.L. Bynum

Caleb Wilson continued his strong start to his rookie season in another loss on a night when Coby White made his season debut and Leaky Black got four steals in a big game.

Wilson finished with 24 points, seven rebounds, four assists and four steals on Monday night, but the 1–6 Chicago Bulls lost 126–107 in Philadelphia for their fifth straight defeat.

Wilson, the No. 4 overall pick, made 9 of 17 shots and 4 of 9 on 3-pointers in 34 minutes, his third consecutive game with at least 20 points, and he is averaging 21.6 points and 6.7 rebounds through seven games.

After missing Charlotte’s first seven games with a left calf strain, White started in the Hornets’ 124–91 loss to Detroit.

He played nearly 16 minutes and had seven points on 3-of-9 shooting, three assists and three turnovers, and he was the only Hornets player with a positive plus/minus (+1).

Before his return, White admitted to some nerves. “I’m always anxious. That’s not out of the norm,” he said. Charlotte plays at Brooklyn on Wednesday.

Black had his breakout game of the season off the bench in Sacramento’s 115–100 win at Dallas, the Kings’ first victory after six straight losses to open the season.

Black, on a two-way contract, played 24½ minutes and finished with 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting, including 4-of-6 on 3-pointers, along with three rebounds in a game in which the Kings’ bench outscored Dallas’ reserves.

Black was +5 and helped Sacramento build a lead in the third quarter with back-to-back 3-pointers.

In other action involving former UNC players since Saturday:

—Walker Kessler had double-doubles in two Lakers wins. He scored 16 points on 6-of-6 shooting with 15 rebounds and three blocks in a 131–125 win over Toronto on Sunday, then added 15 points and 15 rebounds in a 138–117 win over Miami on Monday.
—Day’Ron Sharpe had a season-high game score of 17.2 on Sunday, when he had 15 points, 13 rebounds and four assists in Brooklyn’s 98–90 win at Indiana, but he fouled out of Monday’s 103–90 loss at New York with five fouls and four points. Drake Powell did not play in either game.
—Harrison Barnes did not play Saturday in San Antonio’s 121–111 win over Minnesota (coach’s decision), then scored 13 points on 3-of-4 shooting beyond the arc in 20 minutes off the bench in Monday’s 119–97 win over Utah.
—Cameron Johnson started and had seven points, four rebounds and two steals in Denver’s 118–110 loss to Portland. Utah’s Tony Bradley did not play Saturday and had two points and three rebounds in seven minutes Monday.
