Tar Heels in pros: Anthony looks good in return; Barnes hits 22 in Kings romp; Brooks has big G League game; Little hurt

In only his fifth game of the season, Cole Anthony felt good just to be playing after missing the previous 16 games with a right oblique tear. The result wasn’t what Orlando wanted, a 125–108 home loss to Atlanta on Wednesday night. Still, it was helpful for the Magic to have not only Anthony but 11 other available players after only nine were available in Monday’s road loss to Brooklyn.

What’s a good shot? Hubert Davis has talked about that with his guards

When you have a guard whose most famous shot to date came from well beyond the 3-point arc with a tall defender lunging toward him, it’s sometimes hard to define a bad shot. Of all of the shots immortalized in the Carolina Basketball Museum, the marker for Caleb Love’s 3-pointer over the outstretched hands of Mark Williams against Duke in the Final Four is the farthest away from the basket. When you balance that with Love’s percentages this season, defining a good shot becomes murkier.

Nance, Love shoot UNC past pesky Pilots

Top-ranked North Carolina likely will eventually get burned playing to the level of its opponent but it didn’t happen Thursday against Portland, thanks to Pete Nance and Caleb Love. Nance matched his career-high with 28 points (with a career-high five 3-pointers) and Love added 23 as the Tar Heels finally held off hot-shooting Portland for an 89–81 victory in the first round of the Phil Knight Invitational at the Moda Center in Portland, Ore.

Tar Heels in NBA: White hits 2 clutch 3s late in best game of season; Kessler blocks 5 shots

In his second game back after missing eight games with a left quad contusion, Coby White had his best game of the season. He hit two huge late shots and showed nice hustle diving for loose balls. In 25 minutes, White scored 14 points and four 3-pointers, putting up a season-high 13.6 game score in Chicago’s 118–113 road win Wednesday over the Milwaukee Bucks.

Tar Heels in pros: Brooks has 5 double-doubles, leads G League in rebounding; Barnes’ 27 push Kings’ streak to 7

Garrison Brooks isn’t on an NBA roster, but he’s having the sort of G League season for the Westchester Knicks that makes a good case that he should be. Through six games, he’s the league’s leading rebounder.
Meanwhile, Harrison Barnes can’t be stopped in the last seven games, and the Sacramento Kings can’t be beaten behind his play and leadership.

How to watch, listen to UNC football, basketball on busy week with conflicts

There were groans throughout the Carolina fanbase when everyone realized that the men’s basketball game and the football game on Black Friday would overlap. Fans at home will no doubt use a two-television setup, but it’s frustrating for fans who are at Kenan Stadium to see the No. 18 Tar Heels face N.C. State, knowing that they are missing the top-ranked men’s basketball team’s game.

Tar Heels in NBA: Barnes hits season-high 27 as Kings win streak reaches 6; season-best games for Little, Bullock

Harrison Barnes is on a roll, and so are the Sacramento Kings. There are good vibes all around that the team and fanbase that have been missing for a long time. Barnes collected a season-high 27 points, nine rebounds and three assists Sunday night as the host Kings beat the Detroit Pistons 137–129 for their sixth straight victory. He was 10 of 11 from the free throw line, and his two free throws with 14.6 seconds left put away the win.

Academic concerns delay Anthony Harris’ season at Rhode Island

Anthony Harris, who didn’t play for Carolina after the Jan. 8 game against Virginia, won’t begin his season at Rhode Island until the end of December in the latest of several setbacks for the guard. Harris didn’t enroll in the fall semester at Rhode Island because of academic concerns and was expected to take junior college courses to meet his outstanding requirements. Final exams conclude at Rhode Island on Dec. 22, meaning he could make his Rams debut in their Atlantic 10 Conference opener on Dec. 31 at Duquesne.
