Three teammates on UNC’s 2017 national championship team continue to put up big numbers in the G League as Texas Legends teammates. Tony Bradley scored 22 points in 22 minutes, Theo Pinson had 20 points and Justin Jackson pitched in 16, but the Legends lost 120–114 Wednesday night on the road against the Mexico City Capitanes.
Good, Bad and Ugly Report: West Virginia
Prior to UNC’s Duke’s Mayo Bowl game vs. West Virginia, I made a post on the app formerly known as Twitter begging UNC fans not to make the bowl game a referendum on the entire program given the fact that 12 starters plus a number of key reserves would not be playing for a variety of reasons.
UNC finishes frustrating season finish with another discouraging loss
CHARLOTTE — Quarterback Conner Harrell showed plenty of athleticism, speed and running skills in the challenging role of taking over for Drake Maye. In his first college start, the redshirt freshman was impressive at times but also made a couple of ill-advised passes playing without the same talent around him. West Virginia ultimately made all the big plays in a 30–10 Duke’s Mayo Bowl victory in Bank of America Stadium on Wednesday night.
UNC makes The Athletic’s list of six men’s basketball ‘blue bloods’
There were few surprises when seven sportswriters at The Athletic put the men’s college basketball programs into tiers and determined which six were “blue bloods.”
Tar Heels in NBA: Big games from Sharpe, Johnson help Nets extend Pistons skid to 27; White scores 19; Black to G League
No team in the NBA wants to help the Detroit Pistons end their long losing streak. Cameron Johnson scored a season-high 24 points, and Day’Ron Sharpe notched his fifth double-double and a career-high four blocks to ensure Tuesday that it wouldn’t be the Brooklyn Nets.
Hubert Davis’ rotation size not much different than last season
After retooling his roster, Coach Hubert Davis said he wants to play more players than last season. That’s happened in some games for No. 9 Carolina (8–3), but the rotation size has essentially not changed from last season.

North Carolina jumped two spots to No. 9 in the AP Top 25 men’s basketball poll after an impressive victory over Oklahoma.

After rallying for a victory over Oklahoma, North Carolina stayed at No. 24 in the latest AP Top 25 women’s basketball poll released on Monday. The Tar Heels (8–4) pulled away from a game tied at halftime to earn a 61–52 victory over the Sooners on Tuesday in the Jumpman Invitational at Charlotte’s Spectrum Center.
Tar Heels in NFL: Howell, benched again, has career-worst game; Downs has 9 catches in homecoming game; Chandler, Williams score TDs
Sam Howell again didn’t play well, but his receivers’ struggles didn’t help. For the second consecutive week, Washington coach Ron Rivera benched the struggling quarterback and got a spark off the bench from former N.C. State quarterback Jacoby Brissett.
Tar Heels in NBA: Johnson’s 18 points help Nets end skid, give Pistons 26th straight loss; five other Heels score in double figures
Cameron Johnson led six UNC alums scoring in double figures Saturday night with 18 points and was part of Brooklyn inflicting dubious NBA history on the Detroit Pistons, with a chance to add to that.
Love hits 26, makes many big shots, but last one doesn’t fall in Arizona loss
Caleb Love has never been shy about taking a shot in a pressure situation on a national stage, and he showed that again Saturday in Las Vegas. His last one, a long 3-point attempt that would have won the game, didn’t fall, though, after repeatedly coming up clutch after halftime on a day when he scored 26 points, four 3-pointers, made all four free-throw attempts and pulled down five rebounds.
UNC’s ACC men’s schedule good for NET ranking, but makes winning title tougher
Since the days of the double round-robin ACC schedule are long over, there will always be inequities in the conference schedule. This season, that’s good for No. 11 Carolina’s NET ranking, but winning the regular-season conference title will be more challenging than it will be for other teams.
Tar Heels in the pros: Barnes has big game for surging Kings; Sharpe has best game of season; three 2017 NCAA champs start, lead G League win
Harrison Barnes had his best game in a month, and Day’Ron Sharpe put up his fourth double-double in his best game of the season Friday, when three members of UNC’s 2017 national championship team started and were a big part of a Texas Legends win in the G League.
Withers settles in as ‘glue guy’ at UNC after leaving struggling Louisville program
CHARLOTTE — It’s been quite a season of transition for Jae’Lyn Withers, who was part of more victories at Carolina before Thanksgiving than all of last season with a 4–28 Louisville team. That’s just one of many contrasts for the 6–9, 215-pound graduate student, whose situation is dramatically different than a year ago.
