With most of everyday lineup gone, Forbes must restock roster

OMAHA, Neb. — The lineup will look drastically different when North Carolina opens the 2025 baseball season in February. Coach Scott Forbes must replenish his roster with transfers and freshmen for the Tar Heels to return to Omaha because most of his 2024 lineup will be gone. Even before UNC’s first Men’s College World Series opener, Forbes said that he had already secured a couple of transfer commitments and was working to get more.

Forbes securing transfers, seeking others while trying to lead UNC to national title

OMAHA, Neb. — North Carolina coach Scott Forbes got his fourth Tar Heels team to the Men’s College World Series, thanks in no small part to working the transfer portal. Three of his regular position players and two of his starting pitchers transferred to UNC last offseason. Knowing that up to seven regular starters will finish their careers in Omaha, Forbes has already begun luring another talented transfer class while trying to win a national championship.

UNC’s top-level outfield defense will be huge in spacious Omaha ballpark

OMAHA, Neb. — Charles Schwab Field Omaha’s spacious dimensions can turn long drives into long outs that might be home runs in other venues. When No. 4-seed North Carolina (47–14) gets a rematch with No. 12 Virginia (45–15) in Friday’s 2 p.m. Men’s College World Series opener (ESPN), the dynamics will be a lot different from when the Cavaliers won two of three in Charlottesville, Va., in early April.

Honeycutt, Heels deliver more Bosh Magic; UNC win away from CWS

CHAPEL HILL — Once West Virginia ace Derek Clark was done, so were the Mountaineers, another victim of Bosh Magic. Junior center fielder Vance Honeycutt finished them off with a game-ending two-run home run to left field with two outs as No. 4-seed North Carolina rallied for an 8–6 victory in the opener of the Chapel Hill Super Regional on Friday night before a packed Boshamer Stadium.

Heels will have to beat Deacs, ACC Pitcher of Year, to make semifinals

CHARLOTTE — Wake Forest saved the best pitcher in the ACC for top-seeded North Carolina, and he can’t wait to face the Tar Heels. The No. 7-ranked Tar Heels’ ACC tournament opener at 3 p.m. Thursday against No. 12 seed Pittsburgh (26–28) will be a meaningless tune-up. Win or lose on Thursday, UNC will make the tournament semifin

UNC in ACC tournament pool with No. 8-ranked Deacs; Heels likely to play Thursday and Friday

How good is the ACC? No. 7-ranked North Carolina earned the No. 1 seed in the league tournament but will have to play the nation’s No. 8-ranked team in its pool. When No. 17-ranked N.C. State (32–19, 18–11 ACC) finished a three-game weekend sweep of No. 8-ranked Wake Forest, that earned the Wolfpack the No. 3 seed in the ACC tournament and bumped the Deacons to the No. 8 seed.

Heels solidify national seed with blowout of Duke

DURHAM — If there was any question about No. 7 North Carolina’s worthiness for a national seed in the NCAA tournament, the Tar Heels removed all doubt on Saturday. The Tar Heels pounded No. 11 Duke 14–6 before plenty of Carolina fans at Jack Coombs Field for their eighth win in the last nine games, heading into next week’s ACC tournament in Charlotte, where they will be the No. 1 seed.
