CHAPEL HILL — Winning ACC women’s lacrosse titles has become routine for powerhouse North Carolina but the No. 1-ranked Tar Heels’ route to their sixth consecutive league title on a soggy Dorrance Field was anything but routine. Perennial nemesis and No. 2-ranked Boston College had a lot to do with that for one half with the unyielding play of Eagles goalkeeper Rachel Hall, who held UNC to a season-low four first-half goals. She was no match for the Tar Heels’ incredible third-quarter offensive assault as they rallied from a three-goal deficit with 11 consecutive goals for 16–9 victory Saturday night and their 28th consecutive ACC tournament win.

Fan excitement for UNC’s women’s season should be same as for men’s team
It’s been 13 seasons since the combined anticipation of Carolina’s men’s and women’s basketball seasons has been this high, with both Final Four contenders. The AP Top 25 poll before the 2009–10 season was the last preseason list that ranked both teams in the top 10. The last time both made a preseason AP Top 25 was with the women No. 13 and men No. 6 before the 2014–15 season. If casual women’s basketball followers were ever going to increase their support to help fill Carmichael Arena, now would be the time.
Walton in transfer portal, creating UNC opening for transfer
Kerwin Walton always seemed to be a logical transfer candidate and it appears that his Carolina basketball career may be over. The 6–5 sophomore, who last weekend entered his name into the NBA draft process, has additionally entered the transfer portal. It also gives the Tar Heels an available scholarship and the chance to bring in a transfer who they hope can have the sort of impact Brady Manek had. The stretch-four transferred from Oklahoma for his fifth college season and became a key reason why UNC made the Final Four.
Ryan McAdoo reportedly enters transfer portal
A Carolina men’s basketball player has reportedly entered the transfer portal but his likely departure won’t open up a scholarship for the program that’s at the 13-scholarship limit. Ryan McAdoo, who turned 23 Saturday, has entered the transfer portal, according to verbalcommits.com, as a graduate transfer. McAdoo was on scholarship for his last two seasons at UNC but, given the program’s scholarship numbers, would likely only be able to return for a fifth college season as a walk-on with 13 other players already on scholarship.
Wiggins, part of UNC’s No. 2-ranked freshman class, reportedly in transfer portal
Carolina’s Morasha Wiggins, who played only 181 minutes in 21 games during her freshman season, has reportedly entered the transfer portal. The news was first reported Thursday by Em Adler of The Next, then by WBB Blog publisher Raoul. Adler reported that Wiggins’ finalists are Michigan State, Ohio State, DePaul, Georgia Tech, USC, Kentucky at Oklahoma

Thanks to its Sweet 16 run, Carolina’s women’s basketball team will send a team to the USA Basketball 3X Nationals three-on-three competition next month. Rising juniors Deja Kelly, Kennedy Todd-Williams, Alyssa Ustby and Alexandra Zelaya will make up the UNC team that will complete at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass., May 13–15.
Solid pitching sends Heels into exam break with big victory
CHAPEL HILL — If North Carolina is going to turn the season around, the Tar Heels will do it with the kind of pitching that Wednesday threw them into the exam break in dominant fashion. With nearly a week in between games, Coach Scott Forbes used his top two starters, right-hander Max Carlson and left-hander Brandon Shaeffer, and they followed up good outings last weekend by holding Liberty in check.
Five-star Class of 2023 forward Jackson commits to Carolina
The good news just keeps pouring in for Carolina basketball and Coach Hubert Davis, the latest being Wednesday’s commitment from five-star Class of 2023 power forward Gregory “GG” Jackson. The 6–foot-9, 210-pound star announced in an afternoon press conference at his Columbia, S.C., school that he picked the Tar Heels over Duke, Auburn, Georgetown, South Carolina and Massachusetts. He also considered playing for the G League’s Ignite team.
Kerwin Walton enters NBA draft process
The 283 players who have filed as early-entry candidates to the NBA Draft includes a player from Carolina, but not one you would expect. Kerwin Walton, a 6–5 wing who played sparingly down the stretch for the Tar Heels as a sophomore, submitted his name before the Sunday deadline and appears on the list that the NBA released late Tuesday night.
With starters, scoring and experienced guards back, UNC will fit profile of its past NCAA champions
Every North Carolina national-championship team had two qualities that next season’s Tar Heels will share — veteran guards and at least three of the top five scorers returning. After having three starting point guards in three seasons (Joel Berry II in 2017–18, followed by freshmen Coby White and Cole Anthony), UNC will have the same backcourt duo for the third consecutive season. Like most freshmen, RJ Davis and Caleb Love had their struggles but showed marked improvement as sophomores. History tells you that seasoned backcourts are important, considering only one of Carolina’s six national champions started a freshman guard. Let’s throw in a quick asterisk: It was the greatest player in the history of the game. If you’re reading a story on this website, you should know who that is. If not, read on. With four starters and four of the top five scorers
Love becomes fourth UNC starter returning for next season
Caleb Love’s missed 3-point attempt against Kansas late in the national championship game won’t be his last shot as a Tar Heel because, among other hopes, he wants another shot at a national title. Love announced in a social media video Sunday that he’ll return for his junior season at North Carolina, giving the Tar Heels four of five starters back from last season’s Final Four team.

Bacot says his decision would have been tougher without NIL
If you don’t think that NIL money changes the equation for college basketball players, just listen to center Armando Bacot. Appearing on the Field of 68 “Goodman & Hummel” podcast with Jeff Goodman and Robbie Hummel on Friday, he admitted that his decision might have been different if NIL (name, image and likeness) money wasn’t available. Bacot announced last week that he would return to UNC for his senior season.
Another big UNC offensive day neutralized by giving up big home runs
CHAPEL HILL — Power surges have short-circuited North Carolina in recent weeks and Georgia Tech played the long (ball) game well. Homer runs, two of the five from designated hitter Tim Borden II, drove in every Yellow Jackets run in their 11–8 victory Sunday at Boshamer Stadium as Tar Heels pitching has given up 30 home runs in the last 12 games.
