CHAPEL HILL — Against an overmatched Charlotte program, game one with Conner Harrell directing North Carolina’s offense went smoothly, helped by a young “Bullet” in the backfield.

Quirky play leads to only goal as Duke earns first home women’s soccer win over UNC
DURHAM — Duke made women’s soccer history on Thursday night, but there were plenty of positive ways for No. 2 Carolina to look at the first road loss to the Blue Devils in program history. The unranked Blue Devils scored a breakaway last-minute goal before halftime after some quirky bounces near midfield. It was enough to earn a 1–0 victory at Koskinen Stadium for their first home win over their rivals in 21 tries.
At least one UNC offensive lineman got so tired during 17-play drive he was seeing colors
CHAPEL HILL — When extremely tired college athletes are particularly winded they sometimes see colors. That happened Thursday night for at least one offensive lineman when Carolina dominated time of possession with 29 third-quarter snaps in the Tar Heels’ 19–17 opening-game win at Minnesota.
Tar Heels in NFL: 21 on rosters, including five likely starters, three of those WRs
There was plenty of good news for UNC alums heading into Week 1 of the NFL season, with 21 on rosters — five expected to start — and two on practice squads.
Burnette’s confidence, consistency kicking up, as is UNC’s confidence in him
MINNEAPOLIS — Noah Burnette has come a long way since he missed a field-goal attempt against N.C. State in 2022 that would have forced a third overtime.
Good, Bad and Ugly Report: Minnesota
Year 1 A.D. (After Drake) for Carolina football began on a stormy night in Minneapolis, as the Tar Heels and Golden Gophers engaged in a rainy slog-fest worthy of the Big Ten West before UNC emerged with a 19–17 win.
Tough defense, four Burnette FGs carry UNC to win
MINNEAPOLIS — In recent years, Carolina fans have been told that the defense is better, but those promises have never translated into performance on the field. At least for most of the opener, the Tar Heels unit under first-year coordinator Geoff Collins proved their mettle. The unit forced five three-and-outs to help UNC overcome Max Johnson’s injury to earn a 19–17 victory Thursday night at Huntington Bank Stadium behind four second-half Noah Burnette field goals.
Wing Brooks gives UNC second five-star commitment in six days
Five-star wing Nyla Brooks, the No. 14 player in the Class of 2025, has included North Carolina among the final four schools she is considering. The 6–1 Brooks, from Bishop Ireton High School in Alexandria, Va., posted Thursday on Instagram that she has cut her list to UNC, Maryland, Georgia and Tennessee.

UNC women hold soccer ranking, but men’s team plummets
North Carolina’s women stayed at No. 5 in the new United Soccer Coaches Top 25, while the Tar Heels’ men’s team fell 11 spots.
Dominant No. 5 UNC women finally solve hot goalie, pull out 2–0 win
CHAPEL HILL — Battling a goalie playing as hot as the steamy August conditions at Dorrance Field, it was tough for No. 5 North Carolina to find much satisfaction in a game the Tar Heels dominated. Junior midfielder Tessa Dellarose broke through and changed that when she fired in a shot in the 75th minute as UNC won 2–0 on a Sunday afternoon when the Heels dominated shots 24–3. Graduate UNC goaltender Clare Gagne only had to make one save, but it was massive.
UNC win in first home opener without Dorrance didn’t feel that different
CHAPEL HILL — Plenty was different at Dorrance Field on Thursday. But plenty looked familiar, like a rising star taking over the match and a Hall of Fame coach yelling at the players. It was the first home match in program history without the facility’s namesake as the head coach but the result was like most home openers over the years.
Times set for Carolina’s games at Jumpman Invitational
There won’t be late-night Carolina basketball at the Jumpman Invitational this season. One year after both Tar Heels teams played in the second game of the doubleheaders on both nights at Charlotte’s Spectrum Center, they will play Florida in the first game each evening.
