Tar Heels in Summer League: Pinson, Anthony start, make key free throws in wins

By R.L. Bynum

How will life on the Orlando Magic change for Cole Anthony now that Jalen Suggs is on the team?

Anthony and Suggs both started Monday night in Las Vegas at the Thomas and Mack Center. At least for this game, though, Anthony started at off guard with Suggs at point guard in the Magic’s 91–89 overtime victory over the Golden State Warriors.

Anthony, who reportedly has agreed to a multi-year endorsement deal with Adidas, struggled with his shot, making only one of nine attempts (a 3-pointer) and finished with six points, six rebounds, 2 assists and three turnovers.

Meanwhile, Suggs, the rookie from Gonzaga, collected a game-high 24 points in addition to nine rebounds, one assist, three blocks and two turnovers. Anthony played a little more than 29 minutes and Suggs logged a little more than 28.

Anthony was wearing that same No. 50 that was hanging from the rafters of the arena to honor the UNLV career of his dad, Greg Anthony.

Anthony, as Theo Pinson did for Milwaukee later on Monday, made two key free throws. Anthony hit a pair of free throws with 4.3 seconds left in overtime to give Orlando a four-point lead.

Pinson’s big free throws came with 18.9 seconds left in a battle of Tar Heels, with his Milwaukee Bucks beating Isaiah Hicks’ Los Angeles Clippers 81–78.

Pinson started for the Bucks, collecting nine points, five rebounds and four assists against only one turnover in 28 minutes.

Hicks came off the bench to play 11 minutes, with five points, one rebound, two steals and a block.

In his first action as a professional player, Day’Ron Sharpe came off the bench to collect six points, eight rebounds, a steal and a block in 14 minutes of Brooklyn’s 91–84 loss to Memphis. He intercepted a pass and coasted home for a layup at one point and also knocked down a jumper just inside the 3-point arc from the right wing on another possession.

“You can feel him,” Nets Summer League head coach Jordan Ott told the New York Daily News. “You can feel him from the bench. I’m sure you can feel him on the court, on both ends of the ball. It’s the rebounding and it’s also his rim protection. You can tell a couple times, Memphis’ ballhandlers would get downhill, and all of a sudden he’d be there protecting the paint. You can really see that, so it’s pretty impressive stuff for that young man.”

Charlotte lost its first two Summer League games. After neither Joel Berry nor Kenny Williams played in the Hornets’ 93–86 Sunday loss to Portland, only Williams played in Monday’s 80–70 Monday loss to  Sacramento. Williams had two points and a rebound in nine minutes.

Nassir Little had been practicing with Portland’s Summer League team but the Blazers have decided that he won’t play for their Summer League team.
