With eight newcomers and seven returnees, Coach Courtney Banghart’s fifth Carolina team faces a challenging women’s basketball schedule that includes at least seven — and potentially nine — games against teams in ESPN’s way-too-early Top 25 ranking.
Although the Tar Heels will likely only face a challenge on one of their non-conference home game — the Nov. 30 matchup with No. 8 (according to the ESPN ranking) South Carolina in the inaugural ACC/SEC Challenge — they face a difficult overall schedule.
The ACC announced the full schedule Tuesday night, including league game dates.
Other marquee games include a contest in Uncasville, Conn., on Dec. 10 against No. 2 UConn and two games against reigning ACC champion and Final Four participant No. 9 Virginia Tech (Feb. 4 at Chapel Hill and Feb. 25 at Blacksburg).
In addition, the Tar Heels, No. 19 in that ranking, could face Caitlin Clark and No. 3 Iowa on the third day of the Gulf Coast Showcase on Nov. 26 and may meet No. 24 Kansas State on Nov. 25 in that event.
Carolina visits No. 10 Notre Dame (Jan. 7), plays host to No. 14 Louisville (Jan. 21) and visits No. 15 Florida State (Jan. 11).
The Tar Heels open with four November home games, facing Gardner-Webb on Nov. 8, Davidson on Nov. 12, Hampton on Nov. 15 and Elon on Nov. 18 before going to Estero, Fla., for the Gulf Coast Showcase Nov. 24–26.

UNC, who finished 22–11 last season, opens ACC play on Dec. 31 at home against Clemson.
In addition to the Hokies, UNC also meets Duke (Feb. 11 in Durham and March 3 at Chapel Hill), N.C. State (Feb. 1 in Raleigh and Feb. 22 in Chapel Hill) and Virginia (Jan. 14 in Chapel Hill and Jan. 28 in Charlottesville) twice.
Only coming to Carmichael Arena, in addition to Louisville and Clemson are Miami (Jan. 25), Pittsburgh (Feb. 15) and Syracuse (Jan. 4).
League teams that the Tar Heels will only face on the road, besides the Irish and Seminoles, are Georgia Tech (Jan. 18), Boston College (Feb. 29) and Wake Forest (Feb. 18).
Three UNC senior starters from a year ago are back, led by lead guard Deja Kelly and forward Alyssa Ustby (top photo), who are co-captains. Also returning are senior forwards Anya Poole and Alexandra Zelaya, two redshirt sophomores — lead guard Kayla McPherson and center Teonni Key — and sophomore lead guard Paulina Paris.
The three transfers are sophomore guard Indya Nivar from Stanford, junior center Maria Gakdeng from Boston College and senior guard Lexi Donarski from Iowa State. ESPN ranks Donarski as the No. 6 transfer in the country and Gakdeng No. 19 transfer
The star-studded freshman class features stretch-forward five-star Ciera Toomey (No. 4 in the class), four-star lead guard Reniya Kelly (No. 30), four-star forward RyLee Grays (No. 90), wing Laila Hull and walk-on lead guard Sydney Powell.
