Henry visit, Duggins offer highlight busy UNC basketball recruiting week

By R.L. Bynum

North Carolina is hosting five-star wing DeMarcus Henry for an official visit this weekend after extending a scholarship offer to Greensboro Day forward Grant Duggins earlier in the week.

The developments highlight Michael Malone’s recruiting work across multiple classes, following recent offers to Class of 2027 center Cherif Millogo and Class of 2029 guard JJ Crawford.

For Henry (top photo), a Charlotte native who plays at Arizona’s Compass Prep, Rivals’ Joe Tipton reported that UNC would be his fifth official visit, following trips to Louisville, UConn, Arkansas and Kentucky.

Henry has been considering an Oct. 30 commitment, which would put his Carolina visit just ahead of his birthday decision target. That date remains a target, not a confirmed announcement.

Malone’s NBA background has been part of UNC’s pitch to the 2027 prospect.

“He’s a great coach, and he talks to me about NBA-style basketball, which I like,” Henry told Rivals in a previous interview reproduced in Tipton’s report.

Henry, who played for the United States’ U18 AmeriCup team in León, Mexico, in June, is ranked third nationally in the 247 Composite rankings.

Last season at Compass Prep, Henry averaged 15.5 points, 8.2 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 2.2 steals, according to MaxPreps. Playing for Vegas Elite this summer, he averaged 20.2 points, 9.6 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.9 steals in 11 EYBL regular-season games, according to The Field of 68. At Peach Jam, he averaged 18.2 points, 8.0 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.2 steals, according to KSR.

Carolina’s latest scholarship offer went to Duggins on Wednesday after Malone and assistants Chuck Martin and Sean May watched practice at Greensboro Day School.

The class of 2029 forward had already visited UNC in late September, so this week’s offer followed continued evaluation rather than a new campus visit.

“The coaches said they like my versatility, my basketball IQ, and my understanding of the game,” Duggins told Inside Carolina.

Duggins said his family expects to return to Chapel Hill for a regular-season game. Other schools that have made scholarship offers to him include Kansas, Iowa, Florida State, N.C State and South Carolina.

As a freshman last season at Greensboro Day, he averaged 9.3 points, 9.4 rebounds and 2.0 assists while shooting 41.8% from 3-point range. Playing for Team CP3’s 15U team last summer, he averaged 17.2 points, 9.4 rebounds and 1.7 blocks while shooting 61.9% from the floor.

The Duggins offer followed two others the week before.

On Oct. 15, UNC reportedly made a scholarship offer to Class of 2027 center Cherif Millogo of St. Francis High School in La Cañada Flintridge, Calif. Malone, May and Martin were on the West Coast evaluating prospects when Carolina extended the offer, according to Tar Heel 247. Millogo’s other offers include Kentucky, Arizona, Arkansas, Alabama and Louisville.

A day earlier, Class of 2029 guard JJ Crawford, the son of former NBA guard Jamal Crawford, announced a UNC offer on Instagram.
