Tar Heels in pros: Wilson scores 20; White still out; eight in G League camps, including Powell

By R.L. Bynum

As Caleb Wilson kept stacking good nights five games into his rookie season, Coby White still hasn’t made his season debut and eight former UNC players are in G League camp, including Drake Powell.

Wilson, one of seven former Tar Heels still with NBA teams, put up 20 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals in 37½ minutes on Wednesday, but his Chicago Bulls fell to 1–4 with a 133–127 home loss to the reigning NBA champion New York Knicks.

Wilson shot 7-for-18 from the field, including 3-for-8 on 3-pointers, made 3 of 4 free throws, and added two steals and a block while committing one turnover.

Through five games, he’s averaging 20.8 points, 7.0 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 1.8 steals and 1.4 blocks. He is shooting 41.3% from the field, 22.2% on 3-pointers and 74.1% at the free-throw line.

Wilson said he’s using each game to accelerate his adjustment.

“Every game I just take the data, learn from it, watch games over, and it just happens for me,” Wilson told the Chicago Sun-Times.

The Bulls play at Boston at 7:30 p.m. Friday in an NBA Cup game.

In G League training camps

The biggest surprise among the players sent to G League camps is Powell, the only former UNC player in a G League camp who isn’t on a two-way contract. He joins Nets 2026 first-round pick Joshua Jefferson and 2025 first-round pick Ben Saraf in the Long Island Nets camp.

Powell played in one NBA game this season, recording two rebounds and three assists while missing both of his free throws in nearly 12½ minutes. He played five games with the Long Island Nets last season, averaging 11.8 points, five rebounds and three assists.

Asked what Powell and the other young players outside the rotation needed to do to earn minutes, Nets coach Jordi Fernández pointed to readiness.

“Just to be ready when their number’s called and do whatever it takes to help the team win,” Fernández said, according to ClutchPoints.

Leaky Black played eight minutes and finished with two points, a rebound, an assist, a steal and a block for Sacramento in its 130–103 road loss Tuesday to San Antonio, but is on the Stockton Kings training-camp roster. Last season, he averaged 10.3 points and 7.4 rebounds in 38 games for Capital City in the G League.

RJ Davis is with the Austin Spurs after totaling seven points, three rebounds and three assists in three preseason NBA games. He averaged 18.4 points and 4.9 assists in 49 games for the South Bay Lakers last season and shot 42.4% from 3.

Harrison Ingram, who scored 19 points and grabbed nine rebounds across four NBA preseason games but hasn’t played in an NBA regular-season game for the Utah Jazz, is in camp with the Salt Lake City Stars. He averaged 16.6 points, 12.0 rebounds, and 4.8 assists in 40 games for Austin in the G League last season.

Caleb Love, who only played 30 seconds in one game for the Philadelphia 76ers, is in the Delaware Blue Coats camp. He averaged 10.4 points in 49 NBA games last season, which came close to the 50-game limit on his two-way contract; he averaged 24.7 points in 10 G League games.

Pete Nance and Cormac Ryan are both in Wisconsin Herd camp after not playing in any regular-season games for the Milwaukee Bucks. Nance averaged 4.0 points and 3.2 rebounds in four preseason games. Ryan, who averaged 20.9 points in 31 G League games last season and 14.3 points in 11 NBA games, averaged 6.7 points in three NBA preseason games.

Tyler Nickel, a rookie forward with the Westchester Knicks camp, scored 16 points in four preseason NBA games but hasn’t played in any regular-season NBA games.
