Howell solid again but can’t rally Commanders

For the second time in five days, Sam Howell was dealing and tried to rally the Washington Commanders but came up short. He was again unable to get Washington a victory, but he has commanded the attention of the NFL after his performance in the Commanders’ 40–20 loss Thursday night at home against the Chicago Bears that racked up 26.42 fantasy points.

Top-ranked UNC blanks Miami; defense holds opponent shotless in half for sixth time

CHAPEL HILL — It’s hard to beat top-ranked North Carolina in women’s soccer this season, but unranked teams have no shot. There are many reasons, but it all starts with a defense that barely allows any shots. UNC remains unanimous women’s soccer No. 1; Carolina men move up in Top 25

North Carolina’s women’s soccer team remained the unanimous No. 1 pick in the United Soccer Coaches poll, while the UNC men’s soccer team moved up five spots to No. 13. Carolina remained the only Division I school with both soccer teams undefeated heading into the men’s team’s game at 7 p.m. Tuesday (ESPN3) against Elon.

UNC field hockey back at No. 1, giving Heels three top-ranked teams

Coach Erin Matson’s Carolina field hockey team is back on top. The Tar Heels (8–1, 1–0 ACC) were the preseason No. 1 team, but Iowa supplanted them after the Hawkeyes’ 3–2 overtime win over UNC on Aug. 27. That gives Carolina three teams currently ranked No. 1, with Coach Anson Dorrance’s women’s soccer team and Coach Andrew DiBitetto’s men’s golf team also top-ranked. Dorrance, reluctantly bracing for 18-school ACC, intent on maintaining rivalries

Maintaining rivalries already was a challenge for Carolina when the ACC expanded to 15 schools, and it’s only going to get worse for the 2024–25 school year when the league adds Stanford, Cal and SMU. UNC women’s soccer coach Anson Dorrance was a vocal opponent of the latest expansion and what it meant for his program in terms of travel and scheduling.
