Today’s Carolina fans couldn’t imagine the humble roots of women’s basketball on campus, even after Title IX passed, for a program that has won a national championship and could contend for another next season.

UNC takes attitude adjustment into the football season
CHARLOTTE — The three bywords that Carolina coach Mack Brown has emphasized to his team after a frustrating losing season are passion, accountability and toughness. With all three of those, he’s convinced that the narrow late-season road losses to Pittsburgh and N.C. State would have been victories and there would have been a lot more positive vibes at the end of the season.
Three Tar Heels listed as an inch taller in official men’s basketball roster just released
North Carolina’s men’s basketball team has completed its summer practices and released the team’s official 17-player roster for the 2022–23 season on Wednesday. The roster shows that fifth-year wing Leaky Black, senior center Armando Bacot and fifth-year senior Pete Nance are all listed as an inch taller than last season.
What did Bacot say about a possible fifth season, changing his game and his most fun offseason activity?
CHAPEL HILL — As Armando Bacot enters his senior season and continues to enjoy a fun-filled offseason, he doesn’t sound like a player thinking much about using the extra season available to him because of NCAA COVID-19 rules. His focus is on Carolina winning a national championship he narrowly missed out on last season and diversifying his game at the urging of Coach Hubert Davis to better position himself for a career in the NBA.
UNC teammates impressed by hoops IQ of Nance, who doesn’t mind pressure to match Manek’s season
CHAPEL HILL — Pete Nance brings a versatile talent set to Carolina for his fifth college season but also a quality that his numbers can’t convey: a high basketball IQ. His new Tar Heels teammates were happy to convey that after seeing him in pickup games and practices in the Smith Center in the last month.
UNC opens men’s hoops season with four November home games
Carolina’s home non-conference men’s basketball schedule will include games against UNCW, College of Charleston, Gardner-Webb, James Madison and The Citadel. The Tar Heels’ non-conference schedule was announced Friday, as well as an Oct. 28 exhibition game at the Smith Center against Johnson C. Smith.
Is UNC better off with experienced talent rather than elite young talent?
Last summer, Coach Hubert Davis worked hard to keep a player and it worked out pretty well even after he was unable to do that. It’s hard to know now but that pattern may be repeating itself this summer.
Fans can attend open UNC football practice
Fans can attend an open Carolina football practice at Kenan Stadium later this month. The gates will open at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 30, for the practice that goes from 10 a.m. until noon.
UNC takeover day on ACCN showcases men’s hoops win at Duke, 9 other victories in 8 other sports
When it’s UNC’s turn during ACC Network School Takeovers on Tuesday, you’ll see 10 memorable victories in nine sports from the last school year that aired on an ESPN channel. You won’t see the Tar Heels’ Final Four victory over Duke because that aired on TBS, but you’ll get a chance to relive their 94–81 victory in Durham to ruin Coach Mike Krzyzewski’s last home game (6 p.m.), a softball no-hitter, an amazing football comeback and three ACC Tournament championship wins.
Funny off court, intense on court, 4-star Grays will give UNC versatile skills for 6–3 player
When 6–3 four-star Texas power forward RyLee Grays arrives at Carolina a year from now, she’ll not only swat away shots but conventional expectations for a post player. The third member of UNC’s talented women’s basketball recruiting Class of 2023 combines a versatile skill set that includes excellent ballhandling skills, relentless play around the rim and top-level defense, along with a work ethic and intensity that sets her apart from most players.
UNC to face Indiana in ACC/Big Ten Challenge
North Carolina men’s basketball will play Indiana next season in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge and, for the fourth time in five Challenge meetings, the game will be played in Bloomington, Ind. ESPN announced the Challenge matchups on Friday. The Carolina-Indiana game will be played Thursday, Nov. 30, no doubt at either 9 p.m. or 9:30, although the times weren’t announced. The game will air either on ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPNU.
Banchero ‘haunted’ by Final Four loss to UNC, will ‘never get over it’
When you lose your final college game that also ends the career of a legendary coach, it’s going to be hard to get over it. Former Duke star Paolo Banchero made that clear in an interview with Complex ahead of Thursday’s NBA draft.
Criswell-Maye battle could lead to two-QB system early in UNC’s season
CHAPEL HILL — Who will start at quarterback to lead Carolina and try to fill the void left by Sam Howell’s departure? While there is a good bit of optimism with the influx of talent and new coaches that the Tar Heels can rebound from a 6–7 season, the answer to that key question isn’t clear. This is at least the third time veteran UNC coach Mack Brown has gone into the summer in this situation.
Four-star Texas post player commits to UNC women
An already talented Class of 2023 for UNC women’s basketball just got better. RyLee Grays, a four-star 6–3 post player from Houston, picked the Tar Heels on Sunday over N.C. State, Texas, Baylor, Florida and Mississippi.
Versatile power forward Nance will transfer to Carolina
The commitment comes two months later than North Carolina got a key transfer in the last offseason. But the Tar Heels hope that Pete Nance can have the same sort of impact Brady Manek did when he transferred from Oklahoma. Nance’s 3-point shooting percentage last season was better than Manek’s. Nance, the son of former Clemson and NBA star Larry Nance Sr. who played four seasons at Northwestern, will transfer to transfer to UNC after visiting Chapel Hill last week. He announced the news on his Twitter account.
